Careers at Drafter

Build the tools that get hardware made.

Drafter reads what a design means and turns it into something a factory can act on. We are still a small team, growing faster than we are adding process, building for people whose parts end up in orbit, on the pad, and on the floor. The work is deeply technical, frequently unglamorous, and much bigger than we are.

Two technicians in cleanroom suits connecting a wiring harness inside a spacecraft structure.

What you build leaves the building.

A drawing Drafter produces is handed to a machinist who cuts metal to it and an inspector who measures against it. Getting it wrong does not cost a page view, it costs a part, six weeks later, in somebody else's schedule. That is a heavier kind of feedback than most software ever gets, and it is why the details here are worth the argument.

Read the Spaceium story

The problem is the good kind of hard.

Teaching software to read a model the way a manufacturing engineer reads it: what matters, what has to hold, what is free to move. That is geometry and tolerance and GD&T and ASME Y14.5 and CAD kernels, and underneath all of it, judgment that nobody ever wrote down. Nobody has finished this. That is the appeal.

A small team, and the whole surface.

Nobody here owns a sliver of this. You pick the approach, build it, and watch it turn up in real drawings. We work remotely across the USA and get in a room together for work weeks, because some problems move faster at one table than in any number of threads.

The people you would be working with.

Everyone here builds. The list keeps getting longer, and you would still know every name on it by the end of your first week.

An engineer working from a laptop on a folding table on a factory floor, hard hats beside him.

The gap is the whole point.

For a century a drafting room carried what an engineer meant down to the floor. CAD made design faster and left that job behind, and the distance between the two has been widening ever since: slowly, then all at once. Closing it is the argument this company is built on, and it is why this work matters more than the tooling makes it sound.
