We have never been better at designing things. A part can be modeled in an afternoon. But between the screen and the shop floor, what the engineer meant still gets lost: handed off, re-explained, and changed a little at every step.

The bottleneck is getting what you meant into the part that gets made.

Behind every part was a drafting room like this one. Drafters turned what an engineer meant into drawings a machinist could build from.

Design got faster and more precise. Manufacturing moved overseas. The distance between the person who designs a part and the person who makes it kept growing.

We rebuilt how things are designed, but not how a design is communicated. It still reaches the shop through files, phone calls and guesswork, and some of it is lost at every handoff. The drafting rooms closed, but their job is still there.

Getting design intent to the shop floor is one of the oldest jobs in manufacturing.

We named the company after it.

Drafter does that job in software. It reads what a design means and turns it into drawings and data a factory can act on. The goal is for going to manufacturing to be as fast as shipping software.
